You'll notice these aren't your everyday neighborhood cats. They have... two tails.

Allow me to explain:

In the shadowy corners of Japanese folklore, the 猫(ねこ)また prowls—a mysterious 妖怪(ようかい) with a dual identity. Some are said to haunt the mountains, while others transform from ordinary house cats that have simply lived too long.

As these domestic felines age, their tails split in two, marking their transformation into 猫(ねこ)また, and they begin to display eerie supernatural abilities, such as controlling the dead with bizarre dances or wielding swords for protection.

Throughout the Edo period, artists captured 猫(ねこ)また in various forms, often playing instruments or wearing the attire of a geisha, adding to their enigmatic allure.

Their uncanny powers of necromancy and shape-shifting—sometimes appearing as vengeful old women or mischievous spirits—make them figures of fear and fascination.
