Question 1

What is Makoto+?

Accepted Answer

Makoto+ is a membership for adults learning Japanese, built around the monthly Makoto magazine for beginner to intermediate learners. Members get short stories with audio, grammar and kanji explanations, cultural notes, and interactive tools including daily missions and the Makoto+ Japanese Explorer App for iPhone, iPad and Android. It is published by Kotoba, Inc., the company behind TheJapanShop.com and TheJapanesePage.com.

Question 2

Is there a free version of Makoto+?

Accepted Answer

Yes. The Free tier requires no credit card and includes a monthly theme and fun phrase, one weekly sentence breakdown with shadowing and repetition practice, the mobile app with 12 stories plus Frank and the Obaasan Season 1, free access to two Makoto+ courses, the Read Repeat Japanese Sentences trainer, podcast bonus material, and a reusable 5% coupon for TheJapanShop.com.

Question 3

How much does Makoto+ cost?

Accepted Answer

Samurai is $5 per month or $50 per year. Shogun is $10 per month or $99 per year. The Free tier costs nothing. Monthly plans start with a 7-day free trial and can be canceled at any time.

Question 4

What is the difference between the Samurai and Shogun levels?

Accepted Answer

Samurai members download the latest Makoto issue each month in PDF, ePub, and MP3 formats, get the interactive web version of the current issue, new shadowing sentences weekly, and a reusable 10% coupon for TheJapanShop.com. Shogun members get everything in Samurai plus unlimited web access to all 100+ Makoto back issues, most of the Makoto Press eBooks in interactive web format, Shogun-exclusive lessons, and additional monthly downloads.

Question 5

Is there a Makoto+ app?

Accepted Answer

Yes. The Makoto+ Japanese Explorer App for iPhone, iPad and Android puts the stories in your pocket: tap any word for its reading and meaning and save vocabulary as you go. The web version works on every device, and most members use both.

Question 6

What level of Japanese is Makoto+ for?

Accepted Answer

Makoto is written for beginner to intermediate learners, roughly JLPT N5 through N3. Every Japanese sentence comes with furigana, vocabulary, an English translation, and native-speaker audio, so a learner who knows hiragana can start reading.

Question 7

Can I cancel Makoto+ at any time?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Monthly subscriptions can be canceled at any time from your account page. Annual plans run for the year and do not renew if canceled before the renewal date. Plan details are at https://makotoplus.com/subscription-plans/
